Dr Narayan Shah
August 3, 1943 – May 8, 2015
The Ronald McDonald House of Danville and, particularly Camp Dost, has been blessed by the compassion and imagination of Dr. Narayan Shah. Charged with establishing the Pediatric Oncology Department of the Geisinger Medical Center, Dr. Shah looked beyond the day-to-day treatment of patients. He was instrumental in bringing the Ronald McDonald House to Danville so that the families of pediatric cancer patients would have a home-away-from-home while their children were treated. But, for Dr. Shah, that was not enough. His dream was to give his patients an environment for healing—to stretch the journey from dealing with cancer to conquering cancer.
Sadly, we know that is not always possible. However, Camp Dost has given these young patients the optimism and hope that comes with laughter, comeradery and acceptance. For more than 30 years, children have benefited from Dr. Shah’s vision. We will not know many great men in our lives, but we are honored to count Dr. Shah among them. His light is not extinguished with his passing—it only burns more brightly through the lives of the countless children who call themselves Camp Dosters. Dr. Shah’s family has asked that memorial contributions be directed to the Ronald McDonald House and Camp Dost in tribute to this enduring legacy.
